Abstract

Palliation of malignant gastric outlet obstruction is usually managed by gastric bypass surgery, but the risks of a operative intervention of a duodenal obstruction due to advanced pancreatic head carcinoma has been reported to be quite high. Non-surgical intervention with ballon dilatation or diverting percutaneous gastrostomy in conjunction with a feeding jejunostomy have been attempted with minimal success.
Recently, the implantation of self-expanding metal stents, used successfully in the palliative treatment of malignant esophageal and bile duct obstruction, has been reported to offer relief from malignant duodenal obstruction. However, the use of metallic coil stent with a high radial force, flexibility allowing good adatation to the duodenal C-loop for palliation of malignant duodenal obstruction is rare. We report a case of duodenal obstruction due to pancretic head carcinoma palliated with endoscopic implantation of a self-expanding metallic coil stent.
